Storm Brings Heavy Rain and Snow to Minnesota. April 21-23, 2001

Another massive storm moving through Minnesota on April 21-23 brought heavy rains and snow to Minnesota. Heavy snow fell in a 100 mile wide band from Browns Valley to the North Shore. Some places received a foot of snow. Ice buildup on power lines in Duluth caused numerous power outages and knocked many televison and radio stations off the air. In addition, heavy rains fell across much of central Minnesota. The heaviest rains were just to the south of the heavy snow band. The weekly precipitation, departure, and ranking map for the week ending April 23 shows the aerial coverage of this large storm. The rainfalls from this storm and the one earlier in the month set record April rainfalls for the Twin Cities, St. Cloud, Duluth, Rochester, and many other Minnesota cities.

Below you will find various statements released by the National Weather Service regarding this event.
