Heavy Rains Drench Northwest Minnesota (June 22-24, 1997)

A slow moving storm system passing through northern Minnesota brought excessive rains to northwestern counties this week. The rains began Sunday evening, June 22 and continued into Monday morning, June 23. Two to three inches of rain fell in portions of Clay and Becker counties. The rains resumed in earnest later in the evening of the 23rd. Throughout the night, heavy rains drenched portions of Norman, Polk, Red Lake, Clearwater, and Beltrami counties. For the 24-hour period ending at 5:00 AM on Tuesday the 24th, radar-based precipitation estimates show that the storm dropped a narrow band of three to six inches of rain through the region. The deluge led to flooded basements and closed roads.
