Large Hail and Some Welcome Rains:
August 9, 2005
Strong storms moved into Minnesota from North Dakota along a cold front during
the wee hours of Tuesday August 9. These storms slowly dissipated across Minnesota
during the late morning, then reformed with the heat of the day over central
Minnesota and intensified as they moved southeast.
Some welcome rains fell with these storms.
The heaviest rains were reported over south central and south east Minnesota with
Winnebago receiving 2.17 inches of rain, Owatonna picked up an even 2 inches and Waseca received 1.97 inches.
The site with the highest total was 3 miles north of Byron in Olmstead County with 2.38 inches of rain.
Unfortunately,
the rains didn't fall where they were needed the most
over east central Minnesota from Forest Lake to Sandstone.
Severe weather also came along with the rains. West central Minnesota
had large hail just after midnight and when the storms fired up again
in the afternoon, large hail was reported again over southeast and
south central Minnesota.
The largest hail reported was grapefruit-sized hail in Fergus Falls
that smashed car windows and severely damaged a nursery.
Hail damage was also reported with tennis ball to baseball-sized hail in Elizabeth in Otter Tail County. The hail also punched holes
through plastic patio furniture and decks.
The Twin Cities was spared most of the severe weather but did get some
brief heavy rains and dangerous lightning. Three homes were struck by lightning and an airport employee was shocked at Flying Cloud Airport
in Eden Prairie.
