High Heat Over Memorial Weekend:
May 27-May 29, 2006
In one of the warmer Memorial Weekends in history, hot conditions prevailed over Minnesota on Sunday the 28th and Monday the 29th. The 94 degrees on Memorial Day was the warmest on record in the Twin Cities since Congress set Memorial Day as the last Monday in May in 1971. There were scattered power outages in the Twin Cities, especially in the eastern part of the metro either due to the heat, or the strong south winds that accompanied the heat. The 94 on the 29th also set a record for the highest temperature on that date in the Twin Cities, breaking the old record of 91 that was set in 1934 and again in 1988. There were two warm minimums set as well with 75 degrees on May 28th, breaking the old record of 70 in 1969. The minimum of 74 on the 29th also broke the warm minimum record of 69 from 1895,1934 and 1988. Another warm minimum record was set with a low of 67 on May 24th, breaking the old record of 64 set in 1928.
Listed below are National Weather Service Statements about the records broken due to the heat.
