March 8-9 Winter Storm

The snowstorm that hit central and southern Minnesota on March 8th-9th dropped heavy snow in many areas. The 16 inches measured at the Twin Cities International Airport tied 8th place for the all-time snowfall since 1891. Below you will find various statements issued by the National Weather Service regarding this event.

NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE TWIN CITIES/CHANHASSEN MN
243 PM CST TUE MAR 9 1999
 
LIGHT SNOW CONTINUED TO ACCUMULATE OVER THE EASTERN SECTION OF 
MINNESOTA INTO WISCONSIN EARLY THIS AFTERNOON.  SO FAR ACCUMULATIONS 
HAVE BEEN LIGHT IN RETROPECT TO HEAVY SNOW TOTALS YESTERDAY.  
SNOWFALL TOTALS SINCE THIS MORNING HAVE VARIED FROM A FEW TENTHS OF 
AN INCH TO LITTLE LESS THAN TWO INCHES NEAR THE MINNESOTA/WISCONSIN 
BORDER.  

CENTRAL MINNESOTA RECEIVED THE BRUNT OF THE SNOW WITH AMOUNTS 
VARYING FROM 13 TO 17 INCHES IN AND AROUND THE TWIN CITIES.  
ELSEWHERE...SNOW AMOUNTS RANGE FROM 8 TO 12 INCHES ACROSS THE 
SOUTHERN HALF OF MINNESOTA WITH AMOUNTS IN THE 4 TO 7 INCH RANGE 
OVER WEST CENTRAL WISCONSIN WITH THE EXCEPTION OF A FEW ISOLATED 
AMOUNTS EXCEEDING TEN INCHES.  HERE ARE SOME ADDITIONAL AND CURRENT 
SNOWFALL TOTALS AS OF NOON TODAY.

THE PREVIOUS RECORD WAS...5.7 IN 1928.

YESTERDAY 0.94 INCHES OF PRECIPITATION WAS RECORDED IN THE TWIN CITIES. 
THIS IS A NEW DAILY PRECIPITATION RECORD FOR MARCH 8. 
THE PREVIOUS RECORD WAS...0.80 IN 1990.
