Heavy Springtime Rains over Southern Minnesota:
April 6-7, 2006
A powerful storm system sagged to the southeast from Nebraska to Kansas from April 6th to the 7th, 2006. Two separate waves of thunderstorms associated with this storm moved over Minnesota. Heavy thunderstorms developed from west central Wisconsin, westward across the Twin Cities to Olivia. The northward progress of the storms stalled and then continued to rain heavily during the evening hours of the 6th. 2.58 inches fell at the Twin Cities International Airport, the highest total for any day in April on record. The previous record was 2.22 on April 27, 1975. There were reports of highways with standing water during the height of the storm. I-494 was closed for a time between 12th and Nicollet avenues and also I-94 between Cedar and Nicollet Avenues due to flooding. Power was out to approximately 10,000 people during the evening of the 6th. The rains tapered off around 10pm in the Twin Cities.
Round two of the storm began shortly after the first wave fizzled out. This time the heavy rains were focused along Interstate 90 in far southern Minnesota. This covered a larger area and was more intense than the first. The thunderstorms dissipated by the late morning hours of the 7th, but not before causing flooding in Freeborn, Faribault, Jackson, Martin, Nobels, and Rock County. Street flooding was reported in Fairmont, Dunnel in Martin County, Albert Lea and Winnebago.
Listed below are National Weather Service Statements about the storms.
