Heavy Rains and Severe Weather Over Minnesota
June 20, 2005

A strong line of thunderstorms moved out of eastern North Dakota and into west central Minnesota during the morning hours of June 20. The line began to sag south and rolled across the rest of central and southern Minnesota throughout the late morning and into the afternoon. By evening the line was along the Iowa border. The tops of the thunderheads reached 55,000 feet, blocking the noonday sun and creating instant twilight.

Strong winds accompanied these storms with some large hail. Extensive tree damage was reported in parts of Ottertail County especially around Ottertail and Rush Lake. This line of storms was also notable dropping very heavy rains over a short period of time. At the St. Paul Campus Climate Observatory .55 inches fell in 15 minutes. 1.03 inches fell in an hour at St. Cloud State University. Similar reports of roughly an inch an hour seemed to be common with these storms. The highest hourly rainfall reported was 2.5 inches 2 miles southwest of Magnolia in Rock County. 1.88 inches fell in an hour at Amboy in Blue Earth County. The intense rains caused numerous reports of street flooding in places like St. Cloud, the Twin Cities and Worthington. Three feet of water was reported on 8th street and 10th in Worthington after the storm.

Radar imagery from Sioux Falls and Chanhassen National Weather Service depicts the storm rainfall total.
