Severe Thunderstorms in the Heart of the Twin Cities:
July 24, 2006

Strong storms developed over the heart of the Twin Cities during the afternoon and evening of July 25th. Heavy rains fell in a very narrow area roughly a few miles either side of a line along Interstate 94 through the downtowns. Accompanying the heavy rain was some large hail that fell on downtown Minneapolis and St. Paul. Golf ball sized hail was reported on the University of Minnesota Minneapolis Campus. One of the heavier rainfalls reported was 2.48 inches near 38th street and Longfellow south in Minneapolis. The storms then slid off to the east, bringing hail and wind to western Wisconsin. The heavy rains were very geographically isolated. Kohlman Lake in Maplewood saw .18 inches and the Minneapolis Airport picked up .28 with heavier rains in between the two sites.
