Snowstorm of March 31-April 1, 2008
A classic late winter storm took a direct hit on central and southern Minnesota and dumped a wide swath of snow 150 miles wide either side of a line from Browns Valley and Sioux Falls eastward from Duluth to Rochester. This was a very moisture-laden snowstorm with a water content of three-quarters to an inch in some places. in far southeast Minnesota there was more rain than snow. The snow began during the morning of March 31 and continued through the day. The last snow tapered off in the early morning hours of April 1. One of the highest snow totals was New Hope with 9.4 inches of snow.
One interesting aspect of this storm was the amount of snow that gathered on trees and buildings. With the strong April sun the snow melted off the trees and pedestrians had to dodge the falling snow clumps. The path of the storm showed up nicely on the visible satellite from April 1.
Below are snow and precipitation reports from this storm courtesy the National Weather Service.
