Double Snowstorm of March 7th-9th, 2002
A winter storm hit much of Minnesota on March 7th-9th, 2002. The storm came in two waves. The first wave brought heavy
snow to central and northeast Minnesota on the 7th. The second round dropped copious amounts of rain to eastern Minnesota on the 8th. Lightning and thunder were observed over southeast Minnesota with the freezing rain.
Many trees and power lines were coated by ice by late Friday evening on the 8th over eastern Minnesota. Snow fell to
the west and north of the Twin Cities. On Saturday, March 9th, the freezing rain changed over to snow with very windy
conditions. Listed here are some Public Information Statements from the National Weather Service regarding the
strong winds and snowfall from this storm.
