The winter of 2001-2002 stated late and seems to be ending late in central Minnesota. Another weekend snowfall dumped up to a half-foot of snow over portions of Minnesota. The heavy wet snow caused tree branches to break and there were numerous power outages. The snow stared off as rain across the Twin Cities on Saturday morning and changed over to snow throughout the day. Some heavy bursts of sleet pelted the ground in the afternoon. There were also slippery roads Saturday evening as the snow began accumulating on the highways, causing numerous accidents. There were a couple vigorous waves of thunder snow in the evening of the 27th with some vivid lightning and crackles of thunder. The 6.0 inches of snow at Chanhassen was enough to put April 2002 as the 2nd all-time snowiest April on record. 20.2 inches was the total for the month, placing 2002 right behind 1983 that had 21.8 inches.
