Winter Storm:
December 13-14, 2005
A double-barreled storm brought a significant blanket of snow across much of the eastern half of Minnesota beginning in the evening hours of December 13, 2005. It was an unusual event with two areas of low pressure, one over Nebraska and another along the North Dakota/Canadian Border. Both areas drifted to the east during the day on Wednesday, December 14. This set the stage for at least a half foot of snow to fall across much of eastern Minnesota. Some places saw as much as nine inches in east central Minnesota including Winsted with 9.2 inches. The Twin Cities International Airport saw 5.4 inches though midnight on the 14th. The National Weather Service office in Chanhassen saw 7.6 inches.
This weather scenario also cranked up Lake Superior-enhanced snow bands along the north shore. Snowfall amounts on the ridge a couple miles inland from the lake were most impressive. The highest total found so far was 7 miles northwest of Two Harbors where 26.3 inches of snow fell.
Listed below are National Weather Service Statements about this storm.
