Warm and Muggy October Days in the Twin Cities
STATE CLIMATOLOGY OFFICE - DNR WATERS --- FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE --- OCTOBER 3, 2005
Subject: Warm and muggy October days in the Twin Cities.
On Sunday, October 2 the minimum temperature in the Twin Cities was 65 degrees.
This set a record high minimum for the date, beating the old record of
62 set back in 1897. On Monday, October 3 it was even warmer with a
minimum a sticky 72 degrees. This smashed the old record of 65
degrees set back in 1931. Not only did this break the record high minimum
for the date, but it was the warmest minimum ever for October. The old
record was 69 degrees set on October 8, 1997. It was one of only eight
times the mercury has stayed at 65 or greater for a minimum temperature
during an October day.
The eight dates the thermometer stayed at or above 65 in October:
Year Month Day Tmax Tmin
1922 10 4 89 68
1931 10 3 77 65
1962 10 14 79 65
1968 10 14 72 66
1968 10 15 85 66
1997 10 8 74 69
2005 10 2 78 65
2005 10 3 85 72
Not only was the Twin Cities seeing August-like temperatures, it was muggy as well.
Air conditioners were getting a rare October workout. The dew point temperature hovered
in the mid 60's for three days from October 2-4. The highest dew point temperature was
69 degrees on both October 3 and 4, setting records for those two dates. The old records
were 64 degrees for October 3 set back in 1926 and the record for October 4 was 64 degrees
in 1955.
STATE CLIMATOLOGY OFFICE - DNR WATERS --- FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE --- OCTOBER 5, 2005
Subject: two more muggy October days in the Twin Cities
As mentioned in a narrative released Monday by this office, a all-time daily high dew point temperature record was set on Monday in the Twin Cities.
This humid air mass persisted into Tuesday and early Wednesday, contributing to the extraordinarily heavy rainfall.
One more high dew point temperature record has now been established in October 2005:
Daily Maximum Dew point Temperatures - Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport
Monday, October 3 new record: 69 degrees F old record: 64 (set in 1926)
Tuesday, October 4 new record: 69 degrees F old record: 64 (set in 1955)
