Precipitation observing notes and information for
filling-in data forms are available.
The CoCoRaHS (Community Collaborative Rain, Hail, and Snow) program out of Colorado has an excellent page on
'How to read your rain gauge.'.
A 'how to' manual for 'Observing Snow'
describes the basics of selecting a site and using a the snow ruler, a snow board, and other devices. The
National Weather Service also offers useful
guidelined for measuring snow.
Word and PDF (printable) data forms (to record your day-to-day data) are available.
Online Data Entry
Web-based data entry (precipitation, snow fall, depth, etc.) is possible via online data forms.
Both 'login' access and access via 'HIDEN observer ID' can view and edit monthly forms of daily values
for several types of observations. 'postcard-style' data submissions can be made by a
'HIDEN observer ID' can later be re-editted in a monthly form online but 'anonymous' data is only
viewable in reports and cannot be re-edited.
The State Climatology Office provides [username,password]s and establishes 'HIDEN observer ID's
in the observer database. Contact the State Climatology Office by calling call (651-296-4214) or
e-mail.
Start data entry by
- LOGIN
can provide 'edit access' to data for several observers.
This type of access is generally used by county offices and other groups that have one person who maintains
data for several observers (contact SCO for [username,password]).
- HIDEN observer ID' must exist in the observer database (contact SCO)

Gage Suppliers
Some networks continue to seek volunteers. Please contact any of the 'network of network' participants above
if you are interested.
Most Minnesota volunteer precipitation observers use a 4-inch plastic rain gage.
Smaller diameter catch areas are not recommended.
